Root Canal Treatment

Where the inner part of the tooth, the 'pulp', has become infected, a root-canal treatment may be required.

The root canals are at the base of the tooth and extend through the tooth roots where they enter the gums and into the jaw bone. As such they cannot be accessed by conventional dental techniques and repaired with simple fillings.

In order to save a tooth that has become infected in this way, it is essential to remove the infection completely, replace the inner pulp that has been removed and then re-seal the tooth. Often it is necessary to 'cap' the tooth with a protective crown in order to maintain strength.
